Sea Island Plantation
On the US National Historic Register, this plantation is one of the few remaining small plantations on the Sea Islands. We were tasked with preserving and enhancing what was already there. The chimney pieces were caked in layers of old paint which we painstakingly stripped back to show off their full glory. To complement and enhance the original cornicing in the two reception rooms, we used traditional hand-mixed dead flat paint in shades of white and blue. Early ‘feathering’ detailing was left alone in the dining room and library.
A thoroughly modern chef’s kitchen was dressed in handmade refrigerator panels and oiled wood surfaces to blend seamlessly with the period of the house. We used a mixture of vintage furnishings sourced by the client and period items from the region to enhance the building’s unique heritage, whilst simple light-filled fabrics were used throughout to create a distinctly undecorated look that allowed the beautiful bones of the house to shine through.
