A Study in Space

Measuring just 3.5 by 1.6 metres, this diminutive room had to serve as a home office for two people, though not always at the same time! Their day-to-day activities drew upon a plethora of reference books and source materials, which needed to be close to hand. Creating a backdrop for expansive thinking meant banishing any sense of claustrophobia.

Starting with the walls, an ethereal pale turquoise blue was chosen as the backdrop, with the palest hand-mixed dirty pink for the ceiling to expand the space visually. A treasured wallpaper scrap was reinterpreted and hand-painted on the walls in ivory to age it. An oval drop leaf table with no sharp corners to bump into served as a partner’s desk due to its expandable scale, while a Regency ladies chair with disintegrating embroidery was added for atmosphere. Meanwhile, the mirror did its job of doubling the sense of space and light through the open door beyond.
